In Ontario, as in the rest of Canada, the police are separate from government and from the military. Their role is to prevent crime and maintain community safety. The Police Services Act is the legislation that governs policing in Ontario. The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services sets standards for provincial and municipal police forces and monitors the quality of policing in Ontario.
Civilian boards also monitor the province's police forces. These boards are made up of local citizens and help make sure that the public's concerns about policing are heard. Each police force handles complaints about the actions of its officers.
There are several ways to contact your local police:
• In an emergency, dial 911 or your local emergency number.
• Look in the front cover of your phone book for the non-emergency number and contact your local division by looking in the blue pages of your phone book.
• Approach a police officer on the street.
